I was asked the other day what movie I had rented from Netflix, but was worried if One Ring would appreciate it. I thought I had named it, but upon further review, discovered that I had not. Well, the movie was Cashback, a quirky romantic comedy with surreal moments. As I mentioned in the previous post, it's along the lines of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Stranger Than Fiction.
Anyway, it's a great film. The main character is an art student who discovers that he can pause time. He uses this ability to stop and draw the female form in natural poses. So yes, there's a lot of nudity, but as One Ring put it, it's not pornographic. And it's a very, very funny film.
I also had the somewhat misfortune of seeing Cloverfield finally. Think The Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla. I just couldn't get that invested in the film. The jerky camera work was irritating, the characters were cardboard cutouts, and there were some problems with the plot - including the simple fact that nothing was explained! We have no idea where the monster came from, why it showed up in New York Harbor, why it dropped those spider-like critters (now known on the fan sites as parasites), or why when they bit people, the victims exploded! Aside from that, the special effects were pretty cool, and there is definitely room for sequel work, so we'll see what the future holds.
Okay, I'm in the midst of my assessments for the day, so I have to go do chart notes. Have a good one!
Peace.
